Author Candy Leonard Talks Beatleness on Tonight’s Repeat Airing of Pure Pop Radio: In Conversation

beatlenessAuthor Candy Leonard puts a name to the feeling that Beatles fans have always had about their favorite group. Candy’s wonderful book, Beatleness, is a fascinating trip through Fab Four history with a decidedly different perspective–rather than simply recount the group’s history, she spoke to hundreds of Beatles fans who told her how they felt about the group’s music at different points in their career. Did fans react more favorably to early songs? How did they feel when the group broke up and went their separate ways?

All of this and more is discussed in Beatleness. On tonight’s repeat edition of Pure Pop Radio: In Conversation, airing at 7 pm ET (4 pm PT), Candy sits in with Alan Haber to talk about her book and comment on how fans felt about three great Beatles songs: “Norwegian Wood,” “Nowhere Man,” and “The Word.” The whole world gathered together to experience the Beatles phenomenon. Candy’s extensive research pays off with unique perspectives from baby boomer fans.

Tune in tonight at 7 pm ET (4 pm PT) to hear Candy talk about Beatleness. And, if you don’t already have this wonderful book, go here and get one for your very own.

Gary Gebler, Trax on Wax

None other than Gary Gebler, owner of Baltimore, Maryland’s premiere vinyl shop, Trax on Wax, has become an instant fan of Needle Meets Vinyl.

Gary says: “As soon as the needle drops on the record and you hear that warm crackle, you know this is something special. Nothing takes you back to this special place like hearing your favorite songs by the Beatles, the Smiths, Dylan and the Stones to name a few on glorious vinyl. Needle Meets Vinyl is one bad-ass program and gets two thumbs up from Trax on Wax.”

kinks victoria picture sleeveNeedle Meets Vinyl makes its Pure Pop Radio debut this Wednesday night with a typically engaging and tuneful show that runs the gamut from straight-ahead pop (The Kinks’ “Victoria”) to classic, melodic rock (the James Gang’s “Funk #49”) and the classic standard show numbers of yesteryear (Harry Nilsson’s sublime rendition of Stephen Sondheim’s “Marry Me a Little,” from Sondheim’s homonymous Off-Broadway revue). In between, Brian spins tunes from the likes of Bob Dylan, the James Gang, Barbara Lynn, Joan Baez and, of course, the Beach Boys and the Beatles, and relates cool facts and figures about them.

Alan Haber’s Pop Tunes Salutes the Weather From a Seasonal Perspective. Tonight!

pop tunes disc smallumbrellaWe’re back, and just in time! Alan Haber, all decked out in a resplendent yellow raincoat, thigh-high boots and warm, woolen mittens, holds the official Pop Tunes Deejay Show promotional umbrella over tonight’s array of catchy numbers celebrating weather in many, if not all, of its forms. The musical forecast begins tonight at 9 pm ET (6 pm PT) on Pure Pop radio.

Supertramp’s rather catchy pop song, “It’s Raining Again,” a top 15 Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1982, starts off the show with a salute to rain, which many consider a soothing situation–unless, of course, you’re out driving in it with your windshield wipers set on high. The music pours down with the Box Tops, the Grip Weeds, Mark Lindsay, Sgt. Popgrass and Four O’Clock Balloon holding court.

snow untouchedA set of tunes about mist–also a soothing prospect, unless you’re driving in it–follows, starring Ray Stevens, Lesley Gore, the Chocolate Watch Band and the Chesterfield Kings. From mist, Alan turns his attention to snow, also a soothing…well, you know. Vegas With Randolph (with guest star and weather forecaster Alan Haber), Mickey Rooney (yes, Mickey Rooney), the Pearlfishers, and Lou Christie and the Tammys make snow bunnies before winter turns to spring and the music salutes the season of rebirth; the temperatures begin to rise, the weather becomes easier to bear overall, points made clear by way of music from the Paley Brothers, the Legal Matters and Andrea Perry.

To close out tonight’s show, this week’s Beatle Blast teams up with Pop Tunes’ traditional One and Done closing set for the lovely number, “I’ll Follow the Sun.”

Coming Next Wednesday Night, October 21: Vinyl Meets Pure Pop Radio!

record stackWe heard a noise…kind of a marching noise, like the sound of a marching band marching to our front door. As it got louder and louder, we looked out the window and what did we see? Why, we saw hundreds of vinyl records moving toward us, one step at a time. In no time at all, these records entered our studios, piled on top of each other, and said, all at once, “It’s gonna be all vinyl, all the time, baby!”

We quickly sussed out what they were really trying so desperately to say. Their cry was code for “Pure Pop Radio is going to be airing a new show starting this coming Wednesday night, October 21, at 8 pm ET (5 pm PT). And the thing about this show is every song played will be played from vinyl.”

An all-vinyl, all-the-time show? Why, what a great and timely idea!

radio deejay

Our host isn’t this guy, either!

radio deejay 2

Not our host!

What’s the name of this show? Who’s the host? What kind of music will he or she be playing? Well, pop, for one thing; some rock and folk, too; and some classic oldies and things like that. And it’s all coming from vinyl. No CDs, no digital files, no 8-tracks. All vinyl, all the time. On this new show, being aired exclusively on Pure Pop Radio, the needle meets vinyl, kids. The needle meets vinyl.

Be here this coming Monday, October 19, when we will spill and spin all the details of this new show. Until then, hug some vinyl records and sweet vinyl dreams…

Beatles 1 Gets an Overhaul and Our Roundtable Panelists Take a Look on Tonight’s Things We Said Today

the-beatles-things-we-said-todaybeatles 1+Beatles 1+, without question one of the most important and most anticipated Beatles releases ever realized in the digital age, is set to delight both hardcore and mainstream fans when it becomes available on November 6. The four Things We Said Today panelists–Ken Michaels, Steve Marinucci, Al Sussman and Allan Kozinn–discuss the impact of this mind-blowing package on tonight’s all-new edition of the premiere Beatles talk show at 8 pm ET (5 pm PT) on Pure Pop Radio.

beatles 1 blu-rayMind-blowing? Is there any other word to describe the Beatles 1+ package, containing two Blu-ray (or DVD) discs and the remixed 1 album? Sure, you can get the newly-presented 1 experience in other configurations (including, at some point, on vinyl), but why would you want to? If there is a modern-day equivalent of the holy grail in the world of the Beatles, this has to be it.

The Things We Said Today panelists offer their reactions to the new Beatles 1 packages, including the news that remixing of the audio has taken place; Ken’s statement pretty much sums up everyone’s view: “I couldn’t be more thrilled,” he says. We can’t argue with that.

Tune in tonight at 8 pm ET (5 pm PT) to hear Ken, Steve, Al and Allan talk about this most welcome event. See you on the radio!

Things We Said Today is a weekly survey of all things Beatles that’s hosted by a quartet of Beatles experts–today’s Fab Four, if you will. Ken Michaels, host of Every Little Thing, which airs Monday nights at 8 pm ET on Pure Pop Radio, is joined by Beatlefan Executive Editor Al Sussman, Steve Marinucci (Beatles Examiner), and Allan Kozinn, longtime music critic. Other well-known Beatles experts sometimes sit in with the core group. Things We Said Today airs on Thursday nights at 8 pm ET (5 pm PT).
