Graham Gouldman’s Play Nicely and Share EP (Wienerworld, Rosala Records)

Veteran singer-songwriter Graham Gouldman guested last night on Pure Pop Radio: In Conversation to talk about his new EP, the lovely collection of songs known as Play Nicely and Share.

Gouldman, whose history writing and performing wonderful melodic pop songs is long and prosperous, has amassed a collection of work that is nothing less than peerless, from the songs he wrote for other artists in the 1960s, such as  “Bus Stop,” “No Milk Today,” and “For Your Love,” to the songs he wrote and sang while a member of 10cc and Wax and the songs he writes and performs today for his top-shelf solo releases.

During this exclusive program, Graham spoke with me about Play Nicely and Share, and we played three of the EP’s six songs (we also played one song from Graham’s previous album, Love and Work). We talked about his approach to songwriting and the delightful art direction, by StormStudios, that graces the panels of his latest release. StormStudios’ lineage is directly connected with that of the classic design firm Hipgnosis, which created so many rich cover designs for 10cc and Pink Floyd and many other recording artists. And there was more on our docket, including a personal and perhaps surprising Beatles nugget and news about Graham’s place in Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band in Europe this summer. What a fun hour this was!

Sample the songs played during this show: “Let’s Get Lost,” “Come to Mine,” “Play Nicely and Share” (from Play Nicely and Share) Amazon and “The Halls of Rock ‘n’ Roll” (from Love and Work) Amazon.

Purchase Play Nicely and Share: Amazon. Purchase Love and Work: Amazon.

The romance of trains and new release magic, including a World Internet Radio Premiere of the new single by the Weeklings, power this week’s two all-new editions of Alan Haber’s Pop Tunes Deejay Show, airing tonight–Tuesday, February 20–and this Thursday, February 22 at 8 pm ET on Pop that Goes Crunch Radio.

pop tunes disc smallAfter hearing the O’Jays’ classic “Love Train” on a favored Internet radio station, I got the idea to explore the romance of trains for a special themed edition of the Pop Tunes Deejay Show. So, I put on my engineer’s hat and placed the pop train on our tracks to deliver an hour’s worth of songs about all kinds of trains and songs with the word “train” in the title. You’ll hear Albert Hammond’s “I’m a Train,” Johnny Cash’s “Train of Love,” P.F. Sloan’s “Lollipop Train (You Never Had It So Good),” the Monkees’ “Last Train to Clarksville,” songs from West Coast Consortium, the Marthas and Arthurs, the Hardy Boys, the Kinks, and a whole lot more. All aboard tonight at 8 pm ET!

In The Moment Coming March 2nd larger
This Thursday night, February 22 at 8 pm ET on the week’s second edition of the Pop Tunes Deejay Show on Pop that Goes Crunch Radio, we broadcast the World Internet Radio Premiere of the Weeklings’ punchy new single, “In the Moment.” Is it Beatlesque? Is it Fab? Is it in keeping with the rich pop traditions that fuel the Weeklings’ substantial efforts? All will be revealed here on the Pure Pop Radio website this Thursday. (By the way, the song, recorded at famed Abbey Road Studios, goes on sale March 2.)

In addition to the World Internet Radio Premiere of the new Weeklings track, we’ve got two new songs from Linus of Hollywood’s upcoming Cabin Life, and two archival tunes from Winterpills’ Philip B. Price, whose two-CD collection, Without Your Love I’d Be Nowhere at All: Best of the Solo Archives 1988-2004, is a clear winner.

But that’s not all: Thursday night’s Pop Tunes Deejay Show offers up new songs from Juliana Hatfield, who is channeling the majesty of the records of Olivia Newton-John on her forthcoming release; Christopher Cash and the Brilliant Deductions; Chris Price; Dragsterbarbie; Brady Harris Band; Daisy House, and the aforementioned Graham Gouldman. It’s another can’t-miss hour.

Veteran Songwriter and Recording Artist Graham Gouldman Guests on a Very Special Pure Pop Radio: In Conversation

By Alan Haber – Pure Pop Radio alan 5 small

Graham Gouldman’s Play Nicely and Share EP (Wienerworld)

Graham Gouldman, whose songs have provided a sweet soundtrack for so many lives, guests next Wednesday night, February 21, at 9 pm ET on a very special edition of Pure Pop Radio: In Conversation.

Two of Gouldman’s classic songs–“Bus Stop,” a top five Billboard magazine chart-topper in 1966, and “No Milk Today,” a top 40 hit in 1967–are my top favorite pop songs of all time, and that’s just scratching the surface of this veteran songwriter’s output achieved over a veritable lifetime of service to music lovers around the world.

Whether you’ve heard and loved his music from his years with 10cc; Wax; GG06, his duo with 10cc’s Kevin Godley; his extensive solo career, or all of these periods, you’re sure to enjoy listening to this in-depth conversation with one of music’s greatest talents.

Gouldman joined me for a spirited and informative In Conversation talk about his wonderful new EP, Play Nicely and Share, stocked deep with five new classic compositions and a reimagining of the classic Buddy Holly track “Rave On.” But wait…there was more: We talked about the creative and wonderful design for this EP’s package, created by StormStudios, and if you feel a connection with the equally creative and wonderful album covers designed and realized during the days of yore by the design group Hipgnosis, it’s because there is one. And, by the way, you’ll hear all about it.

Of course, we talked about the process of songwriting and other topics, including the writing of the aforementioned “No Milk Today.” You’ll hear three songs from Play Nicely and Share, and one from Gouldman’s previous release, Love and Work. This was a fascinating conversation that you will treasure.

Don’t miss this very special edition of Pure Pop Radio: In Conversation with Graham Gouldman, next Wednesday, February 21, at 9 pm ET on Pop that Goes Crunch Radio. Don’t miss a minute!

Pure Pop Radio: In Conversation Podcasts: Bill Lloyd (Airdate: January 31, 2018)

By Alan Haber – Pure Pop Radio alan 5 small

bill lloydBill Lloyd’s It’s Happening Now is yet another in a long line of sterling albums from one of pop music’s most proficient practitioners. Bill’s first set of original songs since 2012’s Boy King of Tokyo extends his unwavering winning streak. Acoustically based and typically heartfelt, these melodically-charged numbers touch the heart and soul.

bill lloyd it's happening now coverBill joined me on Pure Pop Radio: In Conversation on January 31 to talk about It’s Happening Now. He talked about, and we played, three songs that are among the best he has written and recorded thus far: “Ruby Falls,” which cleverly references Mel Tillis’s song “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town,” driven hit-bound by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition in 1969; the pretty, mid-tempo “Let Me In Your Life Again”; and the gorgeous waltz, “Happiness,” powered by Bill’s strong vocal and a lovely melody.

It is always a pleasure to welcome Bill to the In Conversation microphones. Enjoy this latest visit, and be sure to purchase a copy of It’s Happening Now, one of Pure Pop Radio’s Favorite Records of 2017. Click here to add this glorious album to your collection.

Singer-songwriter Dave Caruso released in 2017 Buddha Pesto Manifesto, his shining masterwork, an album that raises the stakes from his 2014 release, Cardboard Vegas Roundabout, itself quite a momentous collection of melodic pop gems.

Dave sat before the mobile Pure Pop Radio: In Conversation microphones on January 24 to speak with me about Buddha Pesto Manifesto. Among the topics discussed: Dave’s exacting songwriting process, his wide-ranging music-oriented activities, the importance he places on lyrical content, and three of Buddha’s great songs: the baroque “God’s Green Acre,” the early-Beatlesque “Hanging With You,” and the heartbreaking album closer, “I Get to Make You Laugh.” This is another can’t-miss show.

Wednesday night, February 14 at 9 pm ET, Klaatu’s Terry Draper drops in to Pure Pop Radio: In Conversation to speak with me about his latest top-flight collection, Once Upon a Memory. We play, and Terry talks about, three songs from the album, including “All Over Morocco,” a song written in 1979 that was brought up for inclusion on Klaatu’s Endangered Species record but ultimately given a thumbs-down from producer Chris Bond. The recording, which originally appeared on Terry’s Civil War album, features Dee Long on classical guitar and vocals, and John Woloschuk on bass and vocals. You won’t want to miss this show.
