And now for something completely different: It’s cha-cha time for Timmy Sean and his Songs of the Week project: Timmy’s down with the sizzling beat, turning out a souped-up cover of Rick Nelson’s version of the old pop standard, “The Very Thought of You.” The track is now playing in rotation on Pure Pop Radio.

This one’s a golden oldie. “The Very Thought of You” was written and originally performed, in the ballad style of the day, by British bandleader Ray Noble in 1934 and sung by Al Bowlly. Bing Crosby was the next vocalist to step up to the microphone. Over the years, Billie Holliday and Frank Sinatra, among others, have taken their turns at bat with their own versions of this song.

Rick Nelson recorded a version of “The Very Thought of You” and released it in 1964; it just missed slipping into the top 25. And now we have the latest waxing from Timmy, taken at a bit of a faster pace with a bit more of a rock and roll engine driving the train. Lots of fun!

Timmy says: “I spent the last two weeks back east playing in The Mahoney Brothers’ Jukebox Heroes Live! show, and we did a few Rick Nelson tunes for the first time in years. That got me thinking about Adam Waltemire from Pop Garden Radio’s Rick Nelson tribute album.

“When Adam approached me about the project, I had two ideas for arrangements for songs. The first was a re-imagining of ‘Teenage Idol’ (which eventually led off the album), and the second was a piano/fuzz bass/drums Ben Folds Five-esque version of ‘The Very Thought of You.’ I recorded them both, but in the end we decided to use ‘Teenage Idol’ for the record. Here, seeing the light of day for the first time ever, is ‘The Very Thought of You,’ the ‘lost’ song from Pop Garden Radio’s Legacy – A Tribute to Rick Nelson’!”
