In this corner of the ring, Keith Richards says Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is “a mishmash of rubbish.” In an interview with Esquire magazine, Keith also pooh-poohed the Rolling Stones’ Their Satanic Majesties Request. It may well be a case of all things being equal, or thereabouts.
On tonight’s timely edition of Things We Said Today, the weekly Beatles roundtable, Ken Michaels, Steve Marinucci, Al Sussman and Allan Kozinn put all of their Fab cards on the table as they talk with super Stones fan Michael Lynch, who, as it happens, wrote the Things We Said Today theme song.
Lynch, as it happens, is a huge fan of both the Beatles and the Stones. He turns out to be the perfect person to look objectively at Richards’ comments and assess their validity. Does Keith say things for shock value? Are Pepper and Majesties really good albums? It may surprise listeners that Lynch is a big Stones fan who prefers Pepper to Majesties. He actually gives the nod to Magical Mystery Tour over Pepper, and likes the Stones’ Between the Buttons more than Majesties.
Was there a rivalry between the Beatles and the Stones? What does all of this mean? You’ll find out tonight, as the experts put their heads together. You might just be surprised to find which group comes out of the ring with a knockout!
Things We Said Today is a weekly survey of all things Beatles that’s hosted by a quartet of Beatles experts–today’s Fab Four, if you will. Ken Michaels, host of Every Little Thing, which airs Monday nights at 8 pm ET on Pure Pop Radio, is joined by Beatlefan Executive Editor Al Sussman, Steve Marinucci (Beatles Examiner), and Allan Kozinn, longtime music critic. Other well-known Beatles experts sometimes sit in with the core group.
