Things We Said Today Tonight: Underrated and Underappreciated Beatles Songs

the-beatles-things-we-said-todayIt’s not uncommon for Beatles fans to talk to each other about their favorite of the group’s songs. What may be less common, though, are discussions about Beatles songs that are underrated or underappreciated. Which songs do you think deserve more chatter and play?

The regular panel and guest Darren DeVivo from WFUV radio tackle this discussion with their usual passion on tonight’s edition of Things We Said Today at 8 pm ET (5 pm PT) on Pure Pop Radio. Beatlefan’s Al Sussman talks about “Fixing a Hole,” “Tell Me What You See”‘s unusual melody, and George Harrison’s “The Inner Light.” Darren talks about George’s “It’s All Too Much” as exhibiting “everything glorious about the entire psychedelic thing that was going on at that time.” He also picks “Old Brown Shoe” and Paul McCartney’s “I’ll Follow the Sun” as songs deserving of further discussion.

Beatles Examiner’s Steve Marinucci names “You’ve Really Got a Hold On Me” as one of the best covers the Beatles did. He’s mad for the Fabs’ “Christmas Time (Is Here Again),” and finishes his picks up with the doubleheader of “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love”…although, if he had to pick one, it would be “Free as a Bird.” Music critic Allan Kozinn’s selections for further discussion are perhaps the most unorthodox of the panel’s choices: He discusses “Revolution 9,” “You Know My Name (Look Up My Number),” and, in the left field pick of the show, “What’s the New Mary Jane.”

It’s another riveting discussion on the premiere Beatles weekly roundtable, Things We Said Today.

Things We Said Today is a weekly survey of all things Beatles that’s hosted by a quartet of Beatles experts–today’s Fab Four, if you will. Ken Michaels, host of Every Little Thing, which airs Monday nights at 8 pm ET on Pure Pop Radio, is joined by Beatlefan Executive Editor Al Sussman, Steve Marinucci (Beatles Examiner), and Allan Kozinn, longtime music critic. Other well-known Beatles experts sometimes sit in with the core group. Things We Said Today airs on Thursday nights at 8 pm ET (5 pm PT).
